The Rites of the elder mark the passage from adult to elder within the clan . The crowning of age and wisdom that is only reached when entering the older age. The crone most commonly used for the female elder begins when the female reaches the age of barrenness , when fertility of child is no longer able to be reached. The elder crone of whom has made the choices and decisions for her clan. The wise woman and matriarch . This rite of passage is a time of great celebration for the life and wisdom lived, and the knowledge attained that will be shared by those who seek.
Our ancestors held the passing of the mother to the crone in high esteem, it is only in our modern culture that we celebrate more readily the maiden and mother rites, and ignore the passage of time within our elder members. Women has long realised that embracing the crone is not about moving closer to death, but it is in fact the next step along their life journey and marking a life lived and the knowledge attained. It does not mean the ending of their sexual power or beauty. Embracing the Elder is about crossing the threshold of a life lived and fully becoming the woman , in her wholeness with the life experienced.
With the rites of the elder we honour and celebrate the passing of age with the blessings given by Phiona in a beautiful and ancient rite, surrounded by friends and family as we mark this passage of time.
